Exercises - head turns

Neck stiffness is common after long periods of sitting still and can lead to headaches
so it is important to try these exercises throughout your flight.

With your shoulders relaxed, turn your head slowly to the right as far as
you can, as if you are trying to look out the windows on the right side of
the aircraft.

Aim to get the chin close to the right shoulder, then hold it for a count of
three seconds. Now turn your head slowly to look straight ahead of you
for a count of three.

Head left

Now turn your head as far as you can to the left, to look out of the left-hand
windows, tying to get the chin as close to the left shoulder as possible.

look straight ahead again.

In these neck exercises, aim to get the chin as close to the shoulder as
possible without forcing the muscles. Repeat the whole sequence - head
right, head forward, head left, head forward, three times. Head movements should be slow and relaxed.

Those of you who are middle-aged and over may well hear clicking
noises and grating sounds in the bone of the neck - but that's nothing to
worry about.
